THE special sub-committee appointed by Glasgow Transport Committee to consider the Inglis report did not commit itself last week when it considered the report's proposals for abandoning the tram system and handing over to Scottish Omnibuses, Ltd., municipal services outside the city boundary.

Cllr. R. McAllister, convener of the transport committee, asked by whom the suggestions of the report could be put into effect. They could not be practised by three undertakings at present competing with one another; a single authority would be required.

NATIONALIZATION PROGRESS IN INDIA

AFURTHER step towards transport nationalization in Bihar will be taken next week, when 150 State-owned vehicles will be put on the road. A three-year nationalization plan was commenced in August, 1952, and the 210-mile Patna-Ranchi route is to be taken over.

A corporation to run the State-owned road transport system in Hyderabad. hitherto managed by the railway, is to be formed under the Central Road Transport Act. The share capital of the corporation will initially be Rs. 20m. and it is unlikely that public capital will be invited or debentures offered. The Hyderabad Home Secretary has been studying the Bombay State transport system and it is intended to run the Hyderabad organization on similar lines.

In Ceylon, the manager of the Colombo tramways has been asked to submit a report on the possibilities of running single-deckers capable of carrying 100 people.

MINISTER CONGRATULATES B.M.M.O. DRIVERS

A MESSAGE to drivers of the ri Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., from the Minister of Transport was read by the West Midland Licensing Authority, Mr. W. P. James, 0.B.E., last week, when 191 safe-driving awards were presented by the Chief Constable of Birmingham.

"It is not easy to pilot large vehicles through our busy cities in the knowledge that the lives of many citizens depend on you," stated the Minister, "but you have acquitted yourselves with high distinction, and road users everywhere must try to achieve your standards of care and skill."
