A WELL-EQUIPPED Commer mine 1-1 rescue vehicle has been put into service by the Scottish Division of the National Coal Board. The chassis was supplied by James Ross and Sons (Motors), Ltd., Edinburgh, and the body was built by Messrs. Kirkness and limes, Leith.

The body sub-frame is welded to the chassis members and the framework is of ash. Panelling is in light alloy. Fourteen men can sleep in folding bunks with Dunlopillo mattresses. A wash basin is provided with hot and cold taps, there being a 15-gallon hotwater tank with a 2-kW. immersion heater and a 25-gallon cold-water tank.

Rescue apparatus, spare oxygen cylinders and ancillary equipment are housed in lockers on each side of the vehicle. A trickle charger is carried which may be connected to the mains supply. The body flooring is easily lifted for chassis maintenance purposes.

The van can deal with any pit emergency and can be employed as a rescue room at pits with limited building accommodation. Its design was evolved after discussions between the bodybuilders and Mr. James Kirk ness, the Board's chief Scottish safety officer.
