Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Once again we're assessing CAA's long-term

test fleet. And with the Volkswagen Caddy and the Vauxhall Movano, it seems we've stumbled on a couple of beauties.

Admittedly we suspected it all along. But time has only increased our respect for this urban runabout and all the positives point to one thing: sound engineering.

A good test of a light CV's capabilities is whether you'd be happy to use it as transport and not just a tmnsporter of goods.A 500-mile round trip to the North was tackled with ease. allowing the Caddy to show off its credentials as a refined motorway cruiser. It feels unshakeable for a vehicle this size, even in adverse weather conditions. and the direct, positive steering instilsconlidence when travelling at highspeed. Unfortunately,it also produces a degree of road roar from the rear space. And unlike several of its rivals, the Caddy is not available with a fully enclosed bulkhead.

Carrying cred

But it isn't just the way the Caddy drives that has impressed us: its carrying credentials have also been put to the test in its role as an — admittedly small —removal van several times. The combination of twin side sliding doors. a hefty 819kg payload and a load volume of 3.2m7 means it easily punches above its weight. And in the all-important fuel stakes it's returning an average of 43.4mpg,with an impressive 54.5mpg on the last tankful. This is a good result from a strong engine.

At around 9,500 miles the servicing indicator came on —oil changes are every 10,000 miles with major services every two years. So we booked the vehicle in at Drift Bridge VW in Surrey for its first inspection. The telephonL

appointment process was handled with superb efficiency. even allowing for a change in date at the last minute. We were told the service would take an hour and we could wait in reception for the duration if we wanted.

On arrival we were directed to the servicing department. After handing over our keys. we settled down in a seating area where hot drinks and a selection of magazines were available — but scandalously, no CM. In 55 minutes we were collecting our steed, conveniently parked right outside. If only everything in life was as reliable as VW servicing. We were highly impressed with the whole operation.

And it wasn't overly expensive. Parts charges worked out at £49.09 for oil,oil filter and sump plug, while half an hour's labour came to f42.50.That gave a grand total of £91.59. And now the Caddy's all ready to go for another 10,000 miles. •
