A CZECH TRUCK driver who was fined £1,000 almost a year ago for causing a crash that killed a Birmingham pensioner has yet to pay a penny.

Peter Novak has avoided returning to Britain since his court appearance because he could be arrested and held in custody for non-payment of the fine.

Now magistrates in Cheltenham, Glos are writing to Novak's employers in the Czech Republic asking them to pay the fine and deduct the money from his wages.

Novak was fined by the court last March after he admitted careless driving. He had collided with a Ford Fiesta driven by Raymond Spalding of Handsworth Wood, Birmingham, Spalding diE of his injuries following the crash on the M5.

Novak pleaded guilty through a solicitor but d not attend court as he had already returned toll Czech Republic.

Cheltenham magistrate Bob Hughes wr sitting as chairman of the bench when Novak case was heard. Now Hughes has spoken out highlight the problem: "We're writing to ti employer. We've been checking all our files ar we're trying our hardest to chase them."

Hughes adds that the magistrates have writti to the Department for Constitutional Affairs t were told nothing could be done.
