• The Don Safety Trophy, sponsored by the Manchester-based Don Brake Lining company, will not be awarded in respect of 1972. This was the conclusion of the independent panel of experts in road safety and vehicle engineering, led by Lord Chesham, when it met to consider the vehicles introduced during last year.
Lord Chesham said: "1972 was not a good year for safety innovation." On the commercial vehicle front, uncertainty among manufacturers as to the size and weight regulations for future vehicles held up their development of new models.
