The application was heard at the end of November, when the South-eastern Licensing Authority obtained an undertaking from the corporation that no further transfers of profits would be made to the.rate fund without consultations with the Authority. The new rates come into force next Thursday. .

Reductions of stage lengths,, the reintroduction of the 2d. fare and the abolition of. the 3id. ticket are among measures to be introduced by Belfast Corporation on March 5.

• Buses Cost More •

. Routes converted from tram to bus .working between Gateshead and Newcastle will now bear higher charges. Perinission for the alterations has been granted to Gateshead and District Omnibus Co., Ltd., and Newcastle Corporation by the Northern Licensing Authority.

Children's fares and season-ticket rates on 24 routes of the Thames Valley Traction Co., Ltd., from High Wycombe and Maidenhead have now been amended by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority. That Authority has granted revised fares also to the City Coach Co., Ltd., on 11 services, including the London-Southend route and its associated feeders.

The North western Licensing Authority has recommended that the applicatien of Accrington Corporation for higher charges, heard in December, shall be approved. Ordinary return fares, except the existing 4d. return, which will become 5d., are to be abolished. Double returns are also deleted and a 2d. fare introduced.

New Red and White Plan

A revised application, following the lines laid down by the South Wales Authority during the hearing of the original application, reported in " The Commercial Motor" on February 9, has now been filed by the Red and White group. The amendments include increases of 2d. on fares between Is. and Is. lid., 3d. on fares between 2s. and 2s. I Id., and 4d. and 5d. increases on 3s. to 4s. 11d. tickets. These were to be discussed last Wednesday.

Cardiff Corporation has now received recommendations from the transport committee suggesting higher rates on motorbuses and trolleybuses. The ordinary return fares now available are to be abolished, except in one or two cases, odd Id. units in fares above ld. are to be removed.

Increases in operating costs since last year amounting to £110,000 a year have forced Aldershot and District Traction Co.. Ltd., to apply for a general fares increase—the first in 25 years. Single fares between Id. and 5id. will, it. is proposed. go up by id. and others by Id. Cheap returns between Is. 4d. and 2s. will be withdrawn and certain longdistance return fares will be raised. Last October, the concern obtained permission to omit certain concession fares from its tables, and rates were raised in the London Transport area. These will be unaffected by the new application. Express services operated by the company to Bognor, Brighton and Southsea are the subject of another application.

Luton Corporation and the Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd., have proposed increases in scholars' tickets on services in their joint area of operation. Eastern National has also proposed variations aimed at removing anomalies in the fares structure.

An estimated deficiency equal to a 2s. rate was mentioned when Haslingden Corporation's application for higher fares was heard. Operating costs had

gone up by I0.92d. per mile since 1937, it was stated, revenue in the same period having increased by only 7.I2d. per mile.

It was proposed to withdraw all ordinary return tickets. and restrict the availability of workmen's fares, Reserving decision, the Licensing Authority asked that no revenue should be used for rate relief without reference to him.

Economies, as well as higher charges. are now recommended by the general manager of Hull Transport Department. As reported in "The Commercial Motor" last week, a deficit of £59,000 is estimated for next year, and the measures proposed by the general manager would produce an extra £66,250. These include the issue of utility uniforms, the acceptance of advertising on buses and reductions in the number of new shelters. The most recent increase in fares was granted last December.

Other recommendations include; id. and Id. increases on trolleybus fares; increases on children's rates on motorbuses, and Id. supplements on workmen's return through tickets.

Further fares changes producing another £100.000 annually have been suggested by the transport committee to Newcastle-on-Tyne City Council. Additions of id. and Id. to fares above 2d. have, it is believed, been recommended.
