A PROPOSAL to give the Minister of Transport strict new control over the carriage of dangerous goods by road was made in Parliament on Tuesday.

Mr. Graham Page (Tory, Crosby), who is hon. treasurer of the Pedestrian Association for Road Safety, tabled a new clause to the Road Safety Bill.

It provided for the Minister to make new regulations, orders and bye-laws for goods vehicles and for penalties of up to £500 for defaulters.

Mr. Dick Taverne, Parliamentary Under Secretary at the Home Office, opposed the necessity for any new statutory powers and said dangerous substances were already covered by Home Office regulations.

He disclosed that it was intended to regulate the construction of vehicles, and their containers, for the carriage of dangerous substances.

He promised that transfer of the power to the Minister of Transport would be looked at.
