Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHEN a Leyland 0.600 9,8-litre engine was dismantled for the first time after covering 510,000 miles, it was found that the average maximum cylinder-bore wear was 0.008 in. and gudgeon-pin maximum wear on the worst pin was 0.00075 in. Maximum ovality of big-end journals was 0.00025 in., and bearing clearances were 0.006 in. for the first main bearing and 0.007 in. for intermediate bearings. This was reported to the manufacturers by Messrs. W. Gibson and Son, Carlisle hauliers. The engine was installed in a Beaver lorry, and although it had been working satisfactorily it was decided to inspect the unit when the stated mileage was attained. Camshaft and valve gear were found to be in good condition, the valve seats being free from pits. Wear on the stems of inlet valves was between.

0,0005 in. and 0.003 in., and on exhaustvalve stems it was 0.001-0.007 in.

The condition of the engine was largely attributed to the use of a topgrade oil, which was frequently changed, and the maintenance of the engine air cleaner in good condition.
