Brief Details of a New Clayton Product.

ITIIIE steam wagon is peculiarly 1. suited to the conveyance of heavy loads, but as an ordinary fourwheeled vehicle, unless it be used in conjunction with a trailer, its load capacity is necessarily limited by law. Consequently, it cannot always be operated at its full efficiency. If, however, it be transformed into a six-wheeled tractor-lorry, the load capacity can be increased to 10 tons or more, and it then forms a highly economical unit capable of transporting large quantities of goods at a time.

In this connection we illustrate a Clayton 10-ton undertype tractorlorry, which was recently supplied

by Clayton Wagons, Ltd., Abbey Works, Lincoln, to John Wainwright and Co., Ltd.

The vehicle is fitted with a sidetipping body with oil-operated rams, and is being employed principally on the haulage of tar macadam and other road materials, in which it is proving eminently satisfactory.

The engine closely resembles that on the standard Clayton undertype steam wagon, except that the diameter of the cylinders is slightly greater, whilst the boiler has been increased in size and the working

pressure of the steam raised to 275 lb. per sq. in.

T_Ise is made of the Clayton patented valve-control gear by means of which the travel of the balanced piston valves can be adjusted to give a steam cut-off at any position between a quarter and threequarters of the stroke. This is of particular advantage where heavy loads are involved, as it permits the driver to adjust the position of the steam inlet to suit varying road conditions and at the same time to ensure economical running.

The connection between the motive unit and the trailer is by means of a large halland-socket joint, which provides flexibility in all directions.

In order to prevent undue oscillation between the tractor and semi trailer, stout buffer springs are provided.

The vehicle is designed to carry 10-12ton loads at the legal speed of 12 m.p.h.
