Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The scope for confusion over whether learner HGV drivers may drive on motorways was well-aired in your article "Learning Curb" (CM 2-8 April).

The circumstances are so exceptional that it is not surprising that some schools have turned to us hopefully for advice. It is for this reason that the RTITB has been seeking unequivocal clarification from the authorities before taking the unprecedented step of offering specific legal advice to our approved and accredited driving schools.

Our normal role is to approve training standards and techniques; it has never extended to monitoring knowledge or observation of new laws.

However, we have decided to write to all our accredited centres to re-state the advice given in your article, namely: "Do not break the law as it now stands — do not take learner HGV drivers on motorways."
