• Eleven immediate and 21 delayed GV9s resulted in Road Services (Forth) Ltd appearing in Edinburgh last week under Section 69.

Mr W. N. McCoubrey, senior area mechanical engineer, said that there had been 32 prohibitions between March and November last year and a check of the company's activities had been made. The premises had been found to be excellent and there were staff in sufficient numbers who kept records regularly and efficiently. Two possible things might be attempted, he said; improvement of both the quality of the inspections and the actual repairs. He believed the company to be making an honest and sincere attempt to keep its vehicles in a serviceable condition.

Mr Campbell Wardlaw, representing the company, said that there were, in fact. 11 more prohibitions which should be taken into account but even including these he thought that the proportion of defects to the size of the fleet, some 560 vehicles, was very small indeed.

Mr 1 Copland, general manager, said that the group was very much concerned with GV9s and overloadings and reported regularly on these, the causes and remedies, at board level. Since receiving these prohibitions a £4000 brake testing unit had been installed, inspections were now carried out by fully skilled fitters, replacing the semi-skilled men used formerly, and a vehicle inspector had been appointed to look for defects prior to repair and to check again after the completion of repairs.

The LA, Mr A. B. Birnie, said he was satisfied with the evidence submitted and the reports given by his inspectors and he would take no action but would call for a further report at the end of 1971.
