IN OUR opinion the Atego is the strongest of the three shortlisted candidates from the DaimlerChrysler stable. The improvements to the cab have given the little machine an Actros-like interior and its ride comfort is arguably best in class. Payload remains an issue for the 7.5tonner, though that handicap recedes as the Atego moves up the weight range. We've been very impressed with the 18tonne version. which is not only very light, but is an extremely competitive player in its sector.
Verdict We'd be surprised if the Atego isn't in the frame; it might even challenge the TGL for the top prize.
