Reduce Staff
LIBERAL LEADER Mr David Steel suggested in the Commons last week that if Scottish Transport Group's passenger mileage was reduced, the Scottish Secretary should direct a corresponding reduction in the number of staff employed.
But Mr Frank McElhone,. Under Secretary at the Scottish Office, said this was a matter for the Transport Group, and the Minister had no power to give it a direction for the purpose suggested by Mr Steel.
Jobs rally
BUS CREWS from all over South Wales held a rally last Sunday to protest about cash cuts by Dyfed and West Glamorgan councils that are said to threaten 300 jobs.
Free drink
SHOPPERS in the Aberfan centre in Port Talbot can make 10 bus trips for the price of seven — and have a free half-pint afterwards. The idea comes from traders in the centre in conjunction with South Wales Transport.
Rural experiment
FIRST of the four rural transport experiments set up by the Department of Transport is to get off the ground with a funding of E120,000 for two years. It is in the Dinefwr area of Dyfed.
The transport resources of the area will first be surveyed before the local working group suggests any modifications or new services. These would conform with present licensing regulations until legislation allowing relaxations in the four specific areas is passed.
