TRUCK sales in Britain showed signs of an upswing during September, according to figures issued this week by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Sales were three per cent higher, at 15,917, than in September last year. But for the first nine months of this year sales — six per cent down on the same period in 1975 — were disappointing.
Imports have again increased their market share. They won 17.6 per cent compared with 10.9 per cent of sales in September last year.
Over the nine months the importers' market penetration has risen from 11.6 to 13.7 per cent.
The overall market leader both in September and the nine month period was Ford, with 4,814, against British Leyland at 4,392.
Leyland leads the small vehicle class, car derived vans and pickups, while Ford top the table in both the medium and heavy truck market.
