THE NATIONAL Freight Company will be faced this year with a corporate wage claim from the Transport and General Workers Union.

National commercial group secretary Jack Ashwell told CM that negotiations are returning from a subsidiary to an NFCwide basis, and the substance of the claim will be decided over the next two to three weeks.

Speaking in Glasgow last week, NFC chairman Sir Robert Lawrence said that there will have to be "cast iron" productivity deals before the Company is prepared to make anything more than a minimal pay award this year.

"The icing on a plain cake can come only from self-financing schemes," he said.
