Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN estimated 8,000 to 8,500 drivers and conductors employed by the Scottish Bus Group had joined an unofficial strike by Tuesday of this week.

Of the seven companies within the group, only one firm, Highland Omnibuses Ltd, of Inverness, had not been affected by the unofficial action. W. Alexander & Son (Fife) Ltd had been brought to a standstill while the remaining five companies had all been affected to some extent.

The strike, which started last week, is in support of a pay claim for a basic £35 for a 35 hour week.

A spokesman for the SBG told CM on Monday that so far no such demand

had been made. The group had relied on local press reports to keep up to date on the situation.

The spokesman went on to say that at recent official negotiations in London, official representatives of the Transport and General Workers' Union, to which the militant drivers and conductors belong, had asked the National Council for Omnibus Industries merely that any special payments be consolidated with basic wage rates. Other than this, said the spokesman, no demand had been made. He added that the STG would only take part in further negotiations through the National Council.
