Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

O1, OUTSTANDING interest on this stand is naturally the new Omicron chassis, which is here displayed for the first time in this country. In fact, it only left Turin at 1.30 a.m. on Sunday, arriVed at the Curtis works at 11.15 on Wednesday morning, and was at the Show Wednesday evening.

This chassis has been designed especially for passenger transport, although its actual load capacity is 74 tons. Six cylinders cast en bloc are employed in the engine, the bore and stroke being 3+56ins. by 5i ins., giving an R.A.C. rating of 37.2, whilst the actual b.h.P. developed is 100 at 1,600 r.p.m. Seven white-metal bearings are employed for the balanced crankshaft, and these bearings are mounted in carriers webbed right across the crankcase.

There are plates at the side which permit all the big-end bolts to be loosened and the pistons withdrawn through the tops of the cylinders, if this be necessary. Chrome-nickel steel is used for the connecting rods, which have special alloy pistons. The valves are overhead and are operated by two camshafts carried above them. Carburation is effected by Zenith triplediffuser instrument fitted with an air cleaner, ignition being by Bosch hightension magneto. The oil in the crankease is maintained at a constant level by means of an auxiliary pump, whilst the lubricant is forced to the bearings by a gear-type pump. Circulation of the cooling water is effected by a eentrtfugal pump driven through a clutch, The drive of the engine is taken through a single plate to a four-speed gearbox forming a unit with the engine. 'The engine and the whole driving line is offset to the near side, the housing for the final drive and differential gear

ing being well dear of the bodywork, etc. A propeller shaft of ample dimensions and with three universal joints is supported at its centre by a bearing.

Particular attention has been paid to the suspension, which is excellent. The semi-elliptic springs, which are underslung at the rear, are long and wide and they present the interesting feature that Timken roller bearings are employed in all the shackles. To hold the shackle in position each main spring plate is humped over the shackle bolt.

There is a single spiral-bevel reduction gear in the rear axle, and the latter is provided with buffer springs and

two independent brake drums. The back wheels run on ball bearings, but those at the front have bearings of the Timken type. The frame is straight up to the wheel arches and a dropped tail is bolted on.

All the lighting connections and the battery are accommodated in a locker at the near side of the driver, although they would, of course, be differently disposed if the chassis were employed for coachwork.

Steering is by worm and wheel, the arrangement being such that exceptional ease is afforded and easily maintain Maintenance and accessibility ha both been considered and provision made in the construction of this dam for the removal in a few minutes of t complete power unit, comprising the e gins, clutch, gearbox, radiator, dash ai steering gear.

Amongst the passenger vehicles, which there are three, the most strikia is the Ultima coach of the third seri Pentaiota chassis. This is a 26-seat with the body constructed on the We mann principle by the Albany Genial Co., Ltd. It is claimed to be silent all speeds.

• Semi-bucket cane seats are provide although, at option, seats of the norm: type can be employed. A feature of tt design is that the lower step at sac of the two entrances is connected wit the door and slides out as the door i opened, thus there is no projection at a when the door is closed. Still mot striking is the fact that the roof of th coach is removable in six sections, whic are absolutely waterproof when in pos: tion. Each is secured by four loclk, actuated by a key.

On a similar chassis is mounted a 2E seater Berkeley all-weather coach hod by Landon Lorries, Ltd., and incor porating Beatonson headwork fittings This has a fixed canopy at the iron and rear, semi-bucket seats and uphol stay in antique leather.

The third passenger vehicle is a 29 seater bus with a body built bj Strachan and Brown, with patent drot windows, spring back seats, etc.

Finally, there is a Curtis patent horse. box to carry three animals. This was constructedby the Dartford Engineer. lug and Carriage Co., Ltd., and is framed throughout in Duralumin fox lightness.
