Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

rILEARLY. the most interesting exkJ hibit on this stand is the new 10ton six-wheeled heavy-duty chassis which, mounted on pneumatic tyres, costs i795. The whole vehicle is built on extremely substantial lines and incorporates an interesting arrangement of four-wheel suspension at the rear.

Before describing the vehicle in detail we will give the principal dimen

sions. With an overall wheelbase of 20 ft. and a track at the front of 6 ft. 24 ins„ and at the rear of 5 ft. 94 ins., the vehicle is capable of carrying 10 tons over almost any type of country. The wheelbase and track dimensions provide a length of 24 ft. from the dash to the end of the frame, which enables a platform body to be fitted, 20 ft. 2 ills, long by 7 ft, 1 in. wide.

The engine, is rated at 30 h.p. and has four cylinders cast in pairs and bolted to a cast-ironerankcase. The bore and stroke are 110 mm. and 140 rem. respectively. Side-by-side valves are used, and the cylinder heads are detachable in pairs to facilitate valve grinding and decarbonizing. Lubrication is by a submerged geartype pump driven by skew gears from the camshaft, which forces oil under pressure to the camshaft and crankshaft main bearings by .independent feeds ; the big-end bearings of the con, necting rods obtain their supply through passages drilled in the crankshaft itself.

The engine speed is controlled by a centrifugal type Of governor driven from the camshaft, and operates a separate butterfly (or throttle) in the induction pipe, which " cuts in" progressively at 1,400 r.p.m.

A multiple disc clutch, working dry, is enclosed in a housing bolted to the engine crankcase and supports—at the rear—the gear and brake levers. The

clutch plates, incidentally, are Ferodolined.

The normal type of slidiag-Pinion gearbox provides four speeds forward and one reverse, an unusual feature being the fact that the gearcase itself is of cast-iron. At the rear an extension of the gearbox casbag hoe Sea the differential. Fmanating from each side of this casing are two axle shafts, on the ends of which are Mounted chain

sprockets providing the-drive to the forward pair of the rear wheels.

The -chassis is suspended on six semielliptic. springs. The two rear axles have two springs each, which are shackled in the centre to a pivoted link. Twin wheels and tyres are fitted o each of the rear axles.

A 5-ton tipper is also on view with cable-operated tipping gear, powerdriven from the propeller shaft.

The Gazog, ene plant fitted to the 5ton chassis should be of interest to students of cheap heavy transport. The gas producer is of the "Imbert" type and generates the explosive gas by the combustion of wood in a forced-air draught within a small metal .grate. No alteration has been made to the ordinary engine as fitted to the usual Eerliet, except that the compression ratio has been increased semewhat.

A six-cylinder special rapid trailsport chassis is also shown, and -is fitted with an engine having a bore and stroke of 85 mm. and 120 mm. respectively. A seven-bearing crankshaft enables high engine speeds to be maieteined without vibration and, coupled with a full pressure system, internal wear is reduced to a minimum. Servo braking is arranged to drums attached to all four wheels, the hand lever applying a separate set of shoes to the rear drums.

The total lead capacity, inchisive .of the body weight, of this ..particular chassis is 45 cwt. 4. is :suitable for use as a load-carrying vehicle, although it is really intended to be a 2.11-seater.
