Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CATNRING only for the transport of_ heavy and bulky goods, this stand should make a special appeal to irewers, flour millers, etc. . Only two exhibits are staged, one a 10-ton steamer, with an, articulated chassis, and the other a 4-ton trailer.

. The steamer is fitted -with a flat platform body. 20 ft. long and 7 ft. wide, the loading height being in the neighbourhood of 4 ft. 3 ins. Forward a railing is fitted around the semicircular end of the platform, which thus prevents any of the load accidentally slipping down into the mechanism of the articulated portion of the chassis. Before describing the details of the power unit, there are one or two features which are of particular interest in the construction of the turntable. In the first place, a cast-steel ball and socket joint forms the tractive medium, the joint actually being steadied in the normal way by a roller arranged on the turntable itself. An interesting point is the ease with which the trailer 'can be detached from the tractor part; actually, only six joints have tO be disconnected, these largely consisting of steam connections, etc., so that in the event of a brief overhaul being required in the tractor chassis, accessibility of , all parts is ensured.

The two cylinders of the engine have a bore and stroke of 7 ins. and 10,ins. _ . . respectively; and are , of the double

acting -type, working Under a high-pressure Uniflow principle. Poppet valves are 'operated by cams in the usual way.

A feature of this engine is that the cylinders are entirely overhung and are thus free from restraint, which allows them to expand and contract without • causing .distortion to any part of the unit. A direct chain drive from the crankshaft to the centre axle is obtained through the medium of a heavy roller chain, which can be adjusted for tension by moving the axle forwards or rearwards as desired.

Internal-expanding shoes within drums attached to the middle of the wheels are applied by the foot pedal, whilst the hand lever applies a pair of steam brakes with drums on the rearmost wheels only. In addition there is a hand-wheel-operated transmission brake on the middle axle, the drum' being attached to the chaitawheel.
