Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PROMINENT amongst the Austin exhibits are two Austin Twenty ambulances, one coachbuilt and painted and providing accommodation for two stretcher cases and four sitting cases, the other finished in mahogany and designed for one stretcher case and four sitting cases.

The other exhibits are a 20 h.p. 36-cwt. van, a 12 h.p. traveller's brougham and the neat little 7 h.p. light delivery van which is capable of carrying loads of 2i cwt.

The body of the ambulance has an interior length of 6 ft. 6 ins, and is 5 ft. 3 ins. high. There are two doors at the rear, and, if required, a front entrance can be arranged for sitting cases, but this is not included in the example shown. With ambulances it is most important that the suspension should be excellent, and in this case the undersiung rear semi-elliptic springs at the rear arc 5 ft. long and the springs at the front are 3 ft. long. Shock absorbers add to the comfort.

The main specification follows that of the standard Austin Twenty ; the wheelbase is 10 ft. 10 ins.; the engine is a four-cylindered manobloc of 31 ins.

bore and 5 ins, stroke, giving 45 b.h.p. at 2,500 r.n.m.; the cylinder head is detachable and the crankshaft is carried in five bearings of large diameter.

Four speeds are provided by the gearbox, which is formed in a unit With the engine and has central change. Spiral bevels are employed for the final drive in the three-quarter floating axle. The pedal-operated brake acts on all four wheels and there is a hand lever controlling shoes in a drum behind the gearbox.

The Austin Twenty van is an example of the highest class of commercial vehicle, capable of travelling on top gear at anything between 3 m.p.h. and 40 m.p.h. The chassis is similar to that described.

Use of the features of the 12 h.p. traveller's brougham is the low cost of running. It has a body of the van type capable of carrying 10 cwt., and a loading platform 5 ft. 7 ins, long and 3 ft. 8 ins. wide. Double doors, with locks, are provided at the rear.
