Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ONE of the most striking exhibits at Lithe Show is undoubtedly the new tractor shown by Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Ltd., which is built by them under Pavesi patents. This is exhibited on artificial but realistic undulating country, such that the near-side rear wheel and the off-side front wheel are each lifted nearly 2 ft. above the level of the other pair. Such distortion would make any ordinary tractor unworkable, but is permitted by the special design—which has previously been described in The Commercial .41 otora feature of which is a tubular backbone on which two half-chassis are mounted. Where the cross-members of these half-chassis come together they take the form of quadrants with racks Which mesh with a. pinion operated by the steering-wheel. Consequently' the vehicle is actually steered by means of

• its articulated frame. The forward half-frame carries the engine and the one at the rear carries the body.

The wheels also are of very interesting construction, consisting each of a built-up steel rim secured to the hub FS by means of massive spokes arranged on the tangent plan. Each wheel rim carries a series of hinged strakes which can be folded across the tyre add easily locked in position should the tractor ' be used on very soft ground. Normally they are hold by triggers out of the way.

The power unit of the tractor has a bore and stroke of 100 mm. and 1rit) mm. respectively, and is an rip-to-date job with overhead valves. The gearbox, which is built in unit with the engine, contains not only the gears, of which there are three, but also the reduction gear, and front differential. All four wheels are driven from it. A propeller shaft conveys the drive also to the rear wheels. There are two pedal-abplied transmission brakes and also a hand-applied brake, all of which take effect upon the four wheels. A differential clutch is fitted, which can be applied to both differentials and is operated from the .driver's seat. The total weight of the tractor is 5,370 lb. The interest taken in the tractor unit should not be allowed altogether to obscure the trailer which is attached, as this embodies an ingenious steering gear, operated by the towing-bar in such a way that all four wheels of the trailer are steered simultaneously.
