Details of the Activities of the Fleet of Fire-fighting Motors and Ambulances.

THE responsibilities of the Birkenhead Corporation for fire-fighting and ambulance services are on the increase owing to the natural expansion of the borough with the addition of outside areas. The municipal fire-fighting fleet consists of two Dennis motorpumps, each of a capacity of 450 gallons ; a Leyland motor-pump, of a capacity of 600 gallons, equipped with a 16-ft. escape, and a G.M.C. van for the transport of resuscitating outfits, smoke helmets, chemical extinguishers and oilier appliances.

One of the recent additions to the equipment is a Leyland trailer-pump. The ..ambulance fleet comprises three units, including a Daimler and a Minerva. The area served by the ambulances is precisely the same as that pretected by the fire brigade, which is the fire-fighting authority for 26 out side rural districts situated within au area of 12 miles.

During 1927, the total lass sustained in fires attended by the brigade was assessed at 1206,638, the highest figure on record for the past 21 years. The figure for 1927 was 1140,804 above that for 1926, the loss from fire within the borough being 13,209 and the amount

at risk being £.540,419. The remaining loss of 1203,429 oceurred outside the borough boundaries and property to the value of 1252,920 was supposed to be at risk.

The number of calls for the services of the fire brigade during 1927 was

121 and, of this number, 20 were attended outside the borough boundaries. The brigade was engaged at fires for 211 hrs. 59 rains., or an average of 1 hr. 45 mins, at each fire. The distance travelled was 378 mires, or an average of 3.113 miles per journey. Of the fires recorded during the year, 58 occurred between the hours of 6 a.m.

and 6 p.m. and 63 between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The .population of the borough and of the outside districts protected by the brigade is 184,817, there being, on an average, one fireman to every 5,961.8 of the population concerned. The total

acreage ot. the area is 31,734, this giving, on an average, one fireman to every 1,023.6 acres.

In the outside districts protected by the brigade, the following fires occurred :—Bidston, 4; Caldy, 2; Eastham, 3; FIeswall, 3; Moreton, 3; Brenton, 2; Saughall Massie, 1; Willaston, 1. The ambulance cases removed were as follow :—Barnston, 3; Biston, 26; Eastham, 16; Greasby, 2; Fleswall, 9; Hooton, 2; Irby, 3; Little Sutton, 2: Moreton, 52; Neston and Parkgate, 5 ; Noeterum, 1; Brenton, 15; Saughall Massie, 3; Thingwall, 2; Upton, 9; Woodchurch, 4, and Willaston, 1. During 1927, the brigade received 1,274 calls to accident cases, etc., there being an increase of 9 compared with the total for the previous year, also 180 eases were attended to at the station.
