Rear Loading Over a Barrier the Salient Feature of a Karrier Van with Moving Floor

BARRIER loading for refuse-collection vehicles seems to offer so many advantages that most new vehicles now being produced are equipped with a • body in which a barrier of some form or other is employed. Produced for }loll Corporation, a Karrier fourwheeled chassis has recently been equipped with a 10-cubic-yd. van-type body incorporating the moving floor made by the Transport Engineering Co., Ltd., 561, Old Kent Road, London, SE-i.

The main body is built separately from the cab, in which the driver and

his mate sit' alongside the engine. Behind the cab is a separate full-width compartment with comfortable accommodation for at least four loaders.

The barrier moves in conjunction with the floor, the latter being built up of steel strips attached to an endless chain with a two-speed winding gear at the side. When the rubbish is of a light nature, little time is lost during winding periods, as the high gear can be employed, whilst when the container is nearly full of heavy refuse, the low gear enables one man easily to operate the winding equipment.

The main door at the rear is hinged, so that the container can be emptied rapidly. Beneath the hinged door is a sliding platform for the loaders, whilst a folding step is also available if required. The upper part of the rear panel can be fully enclosed by drawing down a roller shutter.

The chassis used is a C.Y.R. model manufactured by Karrier Motors, Ltd., Huddersfield, with wheelbase and track of 10 ft. 6 ins. and 5 ft. 11 in. respectively. It is a straight-frame machine with a separately mounted gearbox and a single propeller shalt The depth of the frame amidships is 7i ins. The vehicle is powered by a four-cylindered engine of 90 mm. bore and 130 mm. stroke, and 49 b.h.p. at 2,400 r.p.m. is available at the flywheel. A righthand-controlled gearbox and wormdriven rear axle are other features of the chassis.
