Dt the Shannon District Court in Ireland, haulier Kevin 1 Smullen was fined about £1,500 for offences carried out while one of his trucks was being driven by a certain Thomas Hennessy.
After stopping the lorry, Irish police (Gardai) found the following faults: • The rear container locks were not closed; • There were no side markings on the vehicle; • There was no fluid in the clutch; • Two tyres were below the regulation tread depth; • The emergency brake was held together by adhesive tape; • The load was not properly secured; To cap it all, the vehicle tax was out of date by seven months. In a masterly example of understatement, Garda Flanagan remarked, "The driver seemed to know nothing about the Road Transport Act." And what did the driver say by way of explanation? Very little, apparently. Before breaking for lunch, Judge O'Dea said he would very much like to meet Hennessy, who had sensibly disappeared into the Irish mist.
