great and appreciated extent, but only because this is considered to be essential to her defence and to -the settlement of Europe. It is indeed galling to the U.S.A. even to appear to be supporting a system which the average American detests. Little Belgium has been placed in the position of being able to tell us that the success achieved by it both financially and in respect of the comparative comfort and confidence of its nationals, could also have been attained by Britain if we had not been deluded by fallacious promises, had been brought earlier to realize the difficulties of the times ahead, and had thus been persuaded to put our backs into the tasks of reconstruction.

Instead of treating our steadily worsening position as being almost as important as a critical stage in warfare, workers' hours have been reduced, no firm action has been taken in connection. with sporadic and unofficial strikes, the power and authority of employers have been lessened, whilst shop stewards (often men clearly showing Communistic influence) have been permitted to sway the masses, and in many cases are still carrying out this policy of their foreign masters.

Having suffered in this way for years, we are at this late hour warned that we must gird our loins and face the dismal prospect of further restrictions and even possible reductions in the few essentials that are allowed to us at present.
