• Kent haulier Alan Firmin is laying off five drivers and reducing the size of its fleet by nine vehicles blaming difficult trading conditions.
The Maidstone firm, which ran 39 trucks on domestic general haulage, has decided to sell the nine trucks rather than park them up. Senior manager Michael Firmin describes the impact of fuel price rises as "disastrous". He says the decision was taken to keep the group in profit.
The firm, which specialises in carrying paper, has a large warehousing operation as well as property and agricultural interests; it employs 120 people. Managing director Paul Firmin says: "Employment in the firm is adjusted to meet changing demands; currently the number of our drivers has been reduced by five. Long-term investment in transport and warehousing is continuing, with a major logistics centre being developed at Snodland."
