Hauliers could see 75% of their fleets standing idle unless the current driver shortage is met soon, a senior industry figure has warned.
Speaking last week at a training conference, Jahn Bridge, national chairman of the RHA, predicted that up to 50,000 extra drivers will be needed once the Working Time Directive conies into force in 2003, with another 50,000 required by 2010. "A number of people have already spoken to me about the number of trucks they have standing idle and the problem is only going to get worse,' he said. Bridge warned that smaller firms will be hardest hit.
Ron Webb, national secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union road transport group, warned that hauliers need to "retain levels of earnings" to keep staff.
