Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN electrically driven load-discharge pump is used on a tanker semitrailer recently built for Filtrate Oils Ltd. The tanks and special bodywork, incorporating compartments for carrying lubricating oil in 5-gal, drums, were built by the Steel Barrel Co. Ltd. and mounted on a special Carrimore drop-frame singleaxle semi-trailer.

Units for the discharge system are located on the left-hand side of the semitrailer and include -a Menrow 11.600 RS positive-displacement gear pump driven by a direct-coupled C.A.V. 24 v. motor. The motor runs at 1,500 r.p.m. and at this speed a delivery rate of 100 g.p.m. is given with oil of 35 sec. Redwood viscosity. The contents of the tank can be discharged by a hand pump incorporated for emergency use. From the pump, the oil passes through filters and the metering equipment before reaching the delivery hose—this is 100 ft. long and is carried on a reel.

It is possible to by-pass the meter and delivery need not be made through the hose, there being a delivery point branched in the pipe leading to it. It is also possible to load the vehicle with the pump without going through the meter. This would only he done if oil had to be picked up from a customer (in cases such as an error in deliveries) as the normal method of loading the tank will be from overhead outlets.

To cater for the current required to run the delivery motor-150 amp is needed for an 80-ft. head—special batteries are carried on the Thames Trader tractive unit to be used with the semi-trailer. These are Oldham 3TQ6— IMH, 6 v. units (four are carried) with a capacity of 228 Ah. To make up the amount of current used in discharging the load a.c. generating equipment is incorporated on the Trader.

Capacity of the five-compartment steel tank is 1,250 gal. and it is surrounded by a light-alloy cover. The tank measures 13 ft. 2 in, long by 4 ft, 7 in. diameter and is mounted on the dropped frame of the semi-trailer. The space .between the tank

and its cover is fitted out to accommodate 5-gal, drums of lubricating oil, there being enough room for 100. This makes the total capacity of the unit 1,750 gal. Access to the drum storage compartments and the discharge units is through lightalloy roller shutters, five on each side and one at the rear.
