Two hauliers made it into a list of the top 300 companies in Wales. Guy Sheppard reports.

TWO ROAD TRANSPORT operators are among the top 300 companies in Wales based on turnover. Cardiff-based Rhys Davies Freight Logistics (RDFL) and Owens Road Services in Llanelli, Dyfed predict they will grow bigger while smaller rivals struggle.

The rankings, based on end-ofyear accounts, are published by the Western Mail in association with PricewaterhouseCoopers and the University of Glamorgan.

RDFL was placed 186th with a turnover of £27.6m: Owens was 274th with £I8.Sm.

Peter Owen. business development director of RDFL, says that as well as haulage it is vital to offer added-value services such as storage and picking in order to expand: "Unless you can offer the type of services that a company like Rhys Davies can, it's very difficult to grow on the back of haulage. We're a total logistics solutions provider and can win contracts from allover the UK. Europe and the world."

Oliver Jones, commercial and technical manager for Owens. says: "Customers don't want smaller hauliers; they want big companies that can offer both a range of services and reliability."

But Jones adds that Owens can't do everything itself so it passes on a considerable amount of work to its subcontractors.

Both companies say contracts that started this year should improve their rankings in next year's table.

Two truck dealers — Euro Commercials (South Wales) and Cardiff Truck Centre — also feature.
