Meanwhile, another rural area is on the point of reaching agreement. Union members in the Eastern area have accepted a January 8 deal which will bring top weight drivers' pay up to £77 for 40 hours.

Subsistence will rise from £8 to £8.75, and to £9 on July 1. There is also an undertaking to update the sickness and accident scheme.

RHA headquarters said this week that it was pleased with this year's negotiations which have been achieved without Government interference.
