the Manchester Ship Canal at Barton, to relieve the heavy congestion on the high level bridge which carries the M63. The bridge and the motorway on either side is only two lanes wide and three lane motorways feed into this stretch.
Councillor Ben Wallworth, chairman of Salford planning committee, said: "Together with Trafford, we should support Great Manchester Council and present a case to Whitehall for this second bridge as a matter of urgency.
"Trafford wants a Carrington spur motorway. 111 Salford we want a link on the opposite side of the river at Irlem. If the two were joined with a second bridge over the canal our problems could be solved."
