Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Two power strapping machines have been announced by Signode Ltd, models ML.1 and the ML.2. They use Contrax 0.25in. co-polymer strapping for applications to a wide variety of binding Operations.

Signode claim that the ML.1 is . • the fastest strapping machine in current production, the ML.2 being an automated version of the ML.1 The ML.1 can apply up to 40 straps per minute.

A high-speed chain-type delivery system carries the strap around the pack lin both cases) With no gripper on the chain. As the chain moves, strapping is applied to the package. This is said to provide positive strap application, avoiding blockages that frequently occur when light

weight strapping is pushed througha strap chute or when the strap end pulls out of a moving .gripper.

The model ML.1 uses stored mechanical energy that is suddenly released to create an almost instantaneous frictiontype weld to the strap ends— in

approximately 0.02 sec,

A high capacity self-contained spool of strapping is designed to save time and trouble.

The model ML.2 automated machine applies up to 30 copolymer .straps per minute using friction weld to achieve strap joints. Unlike. the ML.1, it is equipped with belt conveyors and electric eye sensing systems... • Where one strap is required, easily :adjustable photo-electric Cells. are positioned to apply the strap in the middle of a package of given length. All subsequent packages 'that are within a few inches of the given length will have one strap applied, at or near the centre.

:When two straps are required, the electric cells are adjusted to • apply straps at the required distance from the leading and trailing •edges of the package. As a result, the straps are applied at the same distance from the package edges, even with a wide variation -in package lengths. The ML.2 can be adjusted to apply one or two straps or no straps (where none are needed) to conveyorized packages and bundles.

.Power requirements for the ML machines. are 440V, 50 cycles, 3 phase, and air at 100 psi. is needed to obtan package compression of 230Ib platen pressure, although compression may be reduced to 80Ib platen pressure by cutting the air pressure to 55psi.
