Residents of a small Cambridgeshire village who are furious about the number of trucks which pass through each day will resume a series of protests this summer to force the Government into building a long-promised bypass.

Richard Harlock of Thorney village s If Q Forklifts says that since bypass plans were left out of last year's Transport White Paper (CM 5-11 Nov 19981 protestors have forced the Highways Agency to review the case.

The protests have included a walk from one end of the village to the other and a mass balloon launch. Both events brought traffic to a halt.

Horlock says 2,500 vehicles including 600 HGVs pass through the village every day.

The result of the review is not expected until the end of next month. If the need for a bypass is rejected, Horlock says protests will begin again. "There would be more clamour for more militant action if that happened," he warns.
