• BRS will make more than 30 drivers redundant next month when their work is transferred to sister company Exel Logistics, according to the United Road Transport Union.
The union says the cuts will hit 18 drivers and one manager based at Stevenage, and 14 drivers at Stoke. The drivers are on a contract with computer manufacturer ICL. BRS parent company National Freight Consortium cannot confirm the number of redundancies, but says that some of the drivers may be offered jobs at Exel.
Basic pay is around £180 at both companies, but night rates and holiday pay are better at BRS, says the URTU.
Several BRS drivers transferred to Exel last August but complained of inferior terms and conditions, it says.
