• Reports on the M1 crash at Tinsley Viaduct, Sheffield, when a 5-ton capacity, scrap metal laden lorry swerved across the motorway, crashing through three lines of barriers and plunging 120ft, are to be studied by Mr Geoffrey Rippon, the Minister of the Environment, to see if extra safety measures are required (CM August 31).
A spokesman for the DoE told CM some weeks ago that motorWay crash barriers were designed to specifications laid down by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory and that they must be able to withstand a force of a 30001b vehicle travelling at between 65 to 70 mph on impact at an angle of 20 degrees.
