A STAND-BY-STAND REVIEW OF SEMI-TRAILERS AT THE SHOW

NEW names to be seen among the manufacturers of trailers exhibiting at Earls Court this year are Boden and Northern. Interest in the possibility of increased inter-Continental traffic is reflected in the number of integralboxvan semi-trailers to be seen. Taskers, Scammell, B.T.C. and Carrimore now offer this type of unit as well as York and Dyson, who were the only two manufacturers to exhibit versions at the 1960 Show.

BODEN Stand 132 Boden Trailers, Ltd., Royton, Oldham, Lanes All'AIN interest on this stand will be the J.V.L.12EA 12-ton platform semi-trailer. This is a new model and is produced at a very competitive price. Taskers D.S. automatic coupling is employed. The unit measures 25 ft. by 7 ft. 5 in, and, with a hardwood deck and Cary Laminaire suspension, the model is priced at £650. A similar version, but with fifth-wheel kingpin, costs £725. Also to be seen on this stand is a 17/1010/H tandem-axle maximum-capacity semi-trailer with Hendrickson rubber-sprung bogie. There is also a 15/TL twin-oscillating-axle 15-ton semi-trailer on which B.T.C. Fourin-Line running gear is employed.

B.T.C. Stand 97 The British Trailer Co., Ltd., Trafford Park, Manchester, 17

TWO 12-ton and a I5-ton Four-in-Line semi-trailers are being shown. On one of the 12-tonners two 12-ft.-long bulk sugar containers are mounted. Each has a capacity of 306 Cu. ft. and the floor plates are hoppered at 4Y to full-length discharge doors at each side. The doors are operated by a pneumatic system arranged so that all four can he controlled from the rear of the vehicle by an external supply of compressed air. The containers are of aluminium alloy and have steel reinforcement. The total weight of the semi-trailer and containers is

5 tons 10 cwt. The second 12-tonner has bodywork comprising a front bulkhead, a roof and double rear doors and tailboard at the rear. All are constructed of light alloy and two heavy-duty curtains are fitted the full length of each side so that the full platform area of 26 ft. 8 in. by 7 ft. 11 in. is accessible for loading and unloading. The 15-ton model shown is a standard platform unit, the platform measuring 26 ft. by 7 ft. 6 in. B.T.C. have not got an integral van semi-trailer on their stand but their associated bodybuilding concern Samlesbury Engineering (1961), Ltd., have an example on stand 141.

The trailing arms are 042 welded and gusseted to large-diameter bearing tubes which pivot on the robust cross beams under the main frame members. Braking is by a two-line air pressure assisted hydraulic system incorporating the Clayton Dewandre Air Pak combined air reservoir/ servo/master cylinder unit. The Air Pak, with associated valves, is mounted on the headboard of the semi-trailer to simplify maintenance and improve the synchronization of the brakes between the tractive unit and semi-trailer. A 25-ft.-long 10-ton automatic-coupling semi-trailer with a 1,500-cu.ft. Dove Distributor body is also to be seen and another interesting exhibit is a 12-ton 25-ft. light-alloy-bodied unit with a dual braking system—single-line air pressure and upright vacuum. Both of the single-axle semi-trailers have suspension by conventional leaf springs.

The two other semi-trailers featured on the stand have box-van type bodies. One body is insulated with 2 in. of Polystyrene insulation to the sides and front, whilst the floor and roof have 3 in. of insulation using the same material, the floor insulant being fitted in light-alloy trays The body, which is 26 ft. 9 in. long by 8 ft. wide, is constructed of hardwood framing with exterior and interior panels of light alloy. Highstrength alloy steels—Fortiweld and U.S.S.-T1 —have been used in the construction of the frame and platform and, without sacrificing strength, have enabled a reduction of over 2 tons in unladen weight compared

with comparable units made by Dyson. The semi-trailer on show which is 34 ft. 6 in. long by 8 ft. wide has an unladen weight of only 6 tons 4 cwt. The Aerovan integral van on view has bodywork by Duramin and running gear incorporating air suspension and disc brakes, The body is of all-lightalloy construction and has roller shutters at both sides and the rear. An interesting fitting inside the body is load-control equipment of a type used in aircraft.

Another exhibit is a 15-I6-ton tandem-axle semi-trailer equipped with a dual-purpose body. There has been some controversy over the legality of operating this type of vehicle—it can be used for carrying bulk liquids or general goods. Liquids are carried in a Portolite collapsible tank which rests on a light insulated floor. There is also insulation in the 3-ft. 10-in, sideboards fitted which are hinged at the bottom so that they can be folded inwards, when the tank is not in position, to form a platform. A standard 12-ton drop-side model is the second semitrailer shown. This is of conventional construction 22 ft. long by 7 ft. 6 in. wide and has 2-ft.-high hinged and detachable side and tailboards. Suspension is by leaf springs and the tyres fitted are 9.00-20 12-ply. Capacity of one of the few four-wheeled trailers at the Show to be seen on this stand—it is a tipping model—is 6.5 tons. Tipping is by means of a hand-operated hydraulic ram and the body measures 12 ft. long by 7 ft. wide by 4 ft. deep.
