L'EAR of fuel rationing because of "the present world situation" was expressed by the Labour group of Glasgow City Council last week when a proposal that the city's trams should be eliminated at the earliest possible moment was rejected by 50 votes to 20. Mrs. Jean Roberts, Labour leader, said that in view of the world situation it would he unwise to eliminate an electrified service.

Saying there was no place for such an outmoded vehicle in a city of Glasgow's size, the proposer, Mr. Gordon Reid, added that the trams cost £300,000 to run last year, and in the coming year they would cost £400,000. "1 cannot think of anything good to say of the trams as a modern means of transport," he said.

Mrs. Roberts said that si nee a decision to reduce the tram fleet was made two years ago, 160 out of a total of 1.000 had been abandoned. Another 300 were due to be abolished in the next two years.

The council also agreed that 50 double-deck bus bodies should be built in the corporation's workshops yearly.
