Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SIGNIFICANT developments have been made in tyre construction since the 1954 Show, and probably the greatest of these is the arrival of the . tubeless tyre for heavy vehicles. Six makers—Avon. Dunlop, Firestone, Goodyear. India and U.S. Royal—display at Earls Court their new tubeless covers, although the warning is given that as these tyres are to be supplied at first as original, equipment to vehicle manufacturers, operators who wish to convert existing vehicles may have to wait until the suitable types of wheel are available.

Known as Highway Airseal tyres, the tubeless covers of the Avon India Rubber Co., Ltd., Melksham, Wilts (Stand 206), have a deep slotted tread. The Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd., Birmingham, 24, show a tubeless tyre in section on Stand 214, and the Firestone Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., Brentford, have . tubeless truck tyres on Stand 205.

Tubeless covers of the Goodyear Tyre and Rubber Co. (Great Britain), Ltd., Bushbury, Wolverhampton, may be inSpected on Stand 208, whilst ale

retention properties are demonstrated by the India Tyre and Rubber Co., Ltd., P.O. Box 5, Inehinnan, on Stand 204 by piercing with a 6-ft.-long " nail " a tubeless tyre inflated to normal operating pressure. This enters the tread on one side and comes out on the other.

U.S. Royal Fleetway tubeless tyres are exhibited by the North British Rubber Co., Ltd., Castle Mills, Edinburgh, 3 (Stand 213), in size 9-22.5 (12-ply rating): These covers are intended for a wide range of vehicles and have a new tread pattern with deep grooves, and flat contour. Construction is of the double shock-pad type and the company use a special micro-mixing process.

Claimed advantages for tubeless tyres are a saving in weight, greater safety and cooler running. Fitting to a onepiece drop-centre rim is easy and safe. Because there is no loose flange or locking ring, a cage is not needed.

Goodyear now make tyres with nylon carcasses for the home market, and claim that they possess great strength, toughness and lightness, with increased protection against moisture seepage thrOugh thread cuts and improved• resistance to Shocks.Tread life is extended, say the makers, and a nylon cover can be retreaded more often than a canvas tyre.

Also new are the Davies ClasSie A-type, Dunlop Highway Major and Firestone Transport Truck-Bus covers. Embodying many modern features, the Classic A appears on Stand 210 (DavieS Tyre Co., Ltd., The Hyde, London, N.W.9). The Highway Major is the result of the addition of several features to the standard Dunlop Highway tyre, and increased life is afforded by widening the tread. Squeegee action of knife cuts wipes away water and grease and enhances road-holding.

Sizes Available

The Highway Major sells at a price 5 per cent, above that of standard tyres and is available in the following sizes: 7.50-20 (10and 12-ply), 8.25-20 (10and 12-ply), ,9.00-20 (10-, 12and 14-ply), 10.00-20 (12and 14-ply); • 11.00-20 (12-ply), and 36 x 8.E (12-ply).

The X tyre, a product of the Michelin Tyre Co., Ltd., 81 Fulham Road, London, S.W,3 (Stand 211.), is now avail-. able in sizes 7.50-20, 8.25-20 and 9.00-20, and will shortly be 'offered in 6.50-20. A zig-zag pattern and a Y pattern with a bold tread to afford grip on soft surfaces are made. These tyres have steel cords between casing and tread.

Covers for vehicles operating on and off the road include the Avon Traction Mileage, available in conventional and tubeless form, the Davies Dual-Grip, the Firestone All Traction Truck, the Fisk Bar Traction, India Super Rufway and Super All Purpose, the Pirelli Cross Country master. and the U.S. Royal Fleet Special compound used in the manufacture of the Dual-Grip, state the makers, eliminates cracking and splitting of the tread. A size is made for low-loaders.

The Bar Traction is shown on Stand 215 by Fisk Tyres, Ltd., 296 Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, 4, who are new exhibitors. This cover is alga recommended for the rear wheels of. for example, dairy vans. The Cross Country tyre may be examined on Stand 207 (Pirelli. Ltd., 343 Euston Road, London, N.W.1).

To be made available in the 7.00-20 and .7.50-20 sizes, within the next feW. months, ar retread 'pattern in the dualpurpose category has been designed by Tyresoles, Ltd., Palace of Engineering, Wembley, who are exhibiting in the transport service equipment section on Stand I501J. Centre ribs can accommodate WyresoIes treatment.

. Tyres designed for normal use include the Avon Highway Coach (available in size 9.00-20 only) and Highway Monarch, Davies Classic D-type and S-type. Firestone Super Transport Truck-Buis, Fisk Airborne, Air-Flight and Transportation, India Super G.17, Michelin Metallic and textile covers, and Pirelli P.5 and 268:

Classic D tyres are intended for fast, long-distance vehicles, whilst the S is for use under exacting conditions. Super Transport Truck-Bus tyres sell at a higher price, but Firestone claim a low cost per mile. Fisk Airborne and AirFlight tyres arc for light vehicles.

A version of the G.17 is made by India for buses and, coaches from electrically conductive rubber in order to earth static charges. Specially compounded rubber is used for the .tread•of the Pirelli 268, shown together with a 226 cover for use on bad surfaces.

A feature of Dunlop tyres is, a white indicator strip revealed when the side wall-is worn, thus giving warning that the cover should be replaced.

Representative tyres frotn, the B.B. range are shown by the 13ergougnan Tyre Co., Ltd., 95-100 White Lion

Street. London, N.1, on Stand 212. This concern display their R.Q.E. cover for vehicles used in sandpits or on building sites and refuse dumps.

Other covers intended for such applications include the Fisk Tuf-Lug and the India Super Mining and Logway. Avon, India and Pirelli show tyres for low-loaders, whilst special covers for multi-stop delivery vans may be seen on the Avon, India, Michelin and Pirelli stands. The Avon Express Delivery tyre works at 50 p.s.i. when fitfed to battery-electric vehicles, and the India Light Truck cover is also suitable for ambulances.

The Pirelli Light Truck tyre is intended for vehicles of up to 30 cwt. capacity, whilst the Pirelli Electruck has a casing to resist the effects of kerbing. Its tread is designed to minimize starting Toads upon the batteries of. the vehicles for which it is intended. •

India also feature their Super Winter cover, and 'Firestone show inner tubes with high leak -resistance. Various rubber-to-metal bonded components complete--the Firestone display.

Tyresoles exhibit new equipment for tyre reconditioning, including that for treating covers in the 14.00-24 heavyduty off-the-road range.
