INQUIRY INTO MANCHESTER'S £180,000 AIRPORT SCHEME..

On September 11, the Minister of Health announced that he would hold a public inquiry, on October .9, at Manchester Town Hall, into the application by Manchester Corporation for powers to borpow nearly £180,000 for the purchase of land and the construction of an aerodrome at Ringway.

Considerable opposition . to the scheme has developed in the past few weeks. The main theme of the opposition seems to be doubt as to the need for such a costly project, and uncertainty as to the lines on which commercial air services in Great Britain will develop. The need for a national plan to develop air transport in coordination with other forms of transport will be made plain at this inquiry.

Plan for Joint Yorkshire Airport.

The proposed construction of a joint airport to serve towns in the West Riding of Yorkshire was discussed at a recent conference of local authorities at Brighouse.

The Mayor of Brighouse (Mr. A. Reeve), on whose initiative the conferenee.was convened, said that the area within a 10-mile radius of Brighouse included a number of large towns, and he thought it would be ridiculous for each town to consider the erection of its own airport.

Representatives from Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Ellandl and Halifax were of opinion that their councils would be tvillingto discuss the possibility of developing a suitable site. The Mayor of Halifax (Alderman P. Austin Leach) said that, although Halifax had already applied for compulsory powers to purchase a site which it was proposed to develop as an aerodrome, if any more suitable site were suggested, it would receive every consideration by Halifax Council.

The conference recommended the local authorities represented to approve the formation of a joint committee to consider the feasibility of establishing the airport, each authority being asked to appoint two representatives to the committee.

P.S.I.o.W.A. October Time-table.

Marking the close of the summer season, the October time-table of Portsmouth. Soutbsea and Isle of Wight Aviation, Ltd., reduces to five the number of daily services each way between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, and makes the London (Heston)-Ryde service a week-end one, instead of every day. On the Spithead ferry, an extra service at ordinary fares will be run at any time for a party of four or more persons.

In the week to September 13, the company carried 1,795 passengers between Portsmouth, Ryde and Shank

lin, also 187 between London and the Isle of Wight. The new airport building, which Boulton and Paul, Ltd., has just completed on the company's Ryde aerodrome, is now in use.

Development at Alderney.

There is a prospect that Alderney, one of the Channel Islands, may develop as a holiday resort, for Jersey Airways, Ltd., is considering making it a port of call on its services to and from Portsmouth, Southampton, Lon don and Paris. Negotiations are in progress for acquiring a landing ground.

Ramsgate Scheme Sanctioned.

Ramsgate Corporation has received the sanction of the Ministry of Health and the Air Ministry to buy land to establish an aerodrome from the Royal Harbour. Frequent buses to and from Ramsgate pass within 200 yds. of the site. The aerodrome is 84 acres in extent, and the minimum run is 720 yds. Ramsgate hopes to encourage holiday traffic from the Continent, and the town clerk emphasizes that the 54-acre harbour provides safe moorings for aeroplanes.
