Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN interesting six-wheeler conversion unit is being built by Southern, North and Barker, Ltd., Atlas Works, Brighouse, Yorkshire. The tractor for which the attachment has been designed is the Commer Centaur 2-ton short-wheelbase chassis, and this 4-5-ton articulated six-wheeler -costs 475.

Considerable simplification 'of maintenance results from the use of Commer components, those incorporated in the trailer being the axle, road springs, brake drums and numerous smaller parts. All the wheels and tyres are interchangeable.

The building-up of the unit is effected in a straightforward and robust manner. There are no alterations to the tractor unit, the only addition necessary being the bolting of two sections of channel steel, running lengthwise, to the cross-members of the chassis. On each of the two sections is mounted a bearing, and through the two bearing surfaces runs a rocking bar. The outer ends of the bar carry blocks on which is mounted the 3-ft. turntable. In the centre of the bar is fixed a plate with a spigot, and this forms the connection with the trailer, a pin locking it.

n54 • The platform body is substantially constructed and is mounted on a channel-steel frame lagged with oak runners, so that no further chassis framing is needed. The side boards and other parts that are liable to damage in use are metal-edged. Any body length up to 20 ft. will be provided, types being available for all trades, including a low-loader for removal contractors, which can be supplied for an extra £12.

The trailing axle is of 4-in.-diameter high-tensile steel on to which are hydraulically pressed the spring chairs that carry the 17-leaf rear springs, securely bolted by means of clamps. Duo servo brakes are fitted to all

wheels. A useful extra is a quickrelease turntable with jacking wheels, which can be fitted at a cost of R,25. The attachment is also available with Woods hydraulic tipping gear and, thus equipped, has a loading line only 3 ins. higher than usual.

Commer-S.N.B. articulated sixwheelers are, we understand, handled by all Commer distributors and dealers.
