E EFFICIENCY

Increased Power Output, Higher Speeds, Alternative Fuels, Weight Reduction, etc., Demand Improved Auxiliaries. _A Concise Review of Modern Apparatus

THE substitution of heavy oil and vaporizing oil for petrol as 'fuel for commercial-vehicle engines is, perhaps, one of the most outstanding developments that have taken place during the jest few years. The attainment of the highest practicable brake-horse-power from the en. gine of minimum size and weight has become the aim of most designers.

Economy, simplicity and adaptability for modern chassis layouts are also factors that h a v e influenced the activities of the makers of auxiliaries. As 'engine designers attain better results, improved auxiliaries become necessary, and, in turn, the latter enable the efficiency of the power units to be still further enhanced.

Carburetters have been brought to a high pitch of efficiency, and the accessibility of parts requiring adjustment, and the elimination of wastage of fuel, are forms in which improvements are to be noted. Easy-starting attachments are a comparatively new development, and in the most recent Solex instrument an automatic device for putting the easy starting device out of and into operation is included.

Vaporizers are now produced by several concerns, and various methods of enabling petrol engines to be run on the cheaper and less volatile fuel are employed. The Claude' is actually a carburetter comprising two separate systems, and the change °Ver is made automatically. No alteration is made to the induction system. The-Burtonwood device incorporates a jacketed manifold, and much attention has been given to the standardization of manifolds for various makes of engine. A feature of the Edge vaporizer is that the mixture is heated internally, as well as externally.

Oil-engine makers have a choice of several proprietary fuel-injection systems. Among these the .C.A.V.-Bosch

is the most widely known. The Simms pump was introduced towards the end of 1933, and the Benes apparatus is now handled by Automotive Products Co., Ltd. The E.H. injection pump is expected shortly to be in production.

Commercial vehicles are not yet equipped with supercharged engines. but experiments have been made and there are prospects of the adoption of these devices. In this connection the absence of an automatically produced vacuum on oil engines has led to the inclusion amongst auxiliaries of exhausters, whilst air compressors are often employed for braking, tyre inflation and incidental purposes.

Improved bearings, pistons, and rings and the use of cylinder liners have resulted in higher efficiency, but as these parts are .hardly auxiliaries

they come outside the scope of this article. Reference is made to them, however, elsewhere in this issue.

For the transmission of moderate power to dynamos, fans, etc., the belt is still popular. The products of specialists in their manufacture are of a high degree of reliability and durability, so that their maintenance is reduced to a matter of small importance.

For heavier loads chain drive is convenient and efficient. The name of the Renold and Coventry Chain Co., Ltd., is too well known to' need further remark on the qualities. of its products

Electric equipment, being a subject in itself, is considered in a separate

article, in which electric starters, amongst o ther auxiliaries, are dealt with. There are, however, certain mechanical devices involved, amongst which are the Bendix 'and C.A.V. Bosch starter drives—both of ingenious design. Gear rings for 'flywheels are special lines of G. H. Rodway, Walker Steel Works, Ltd., and William Clark (Spare Parts), Ltd.

No item of equipment, perhaps, plays a greater part in the reliable running and durability of commercial vehicles than the filter. With the use of oil fuels, and delicate injection systems, adequate fuel filtration is absolutely essential. Then lubricating oil must be filtered and air cleaned.

Gauze, fabric and spaced discs, as well as magnetism and centrifugal force, are all employed as means for extracting foreign matter from the medium concerned. It is noteworthy that easy detachability for cleaning, or renewal of the elements, is a feature of the leading makes.

Engine temperature is now considered as of great importance, and the thermostat is a valuable means for maintaining it at the correct degree, and for curtailing the warming-up period. Thermometers, oil gauges, petrollevel indicators, and instruments for informing the driver of the condition of the accumulator, are but a few of the types of gauge available.

Large-capacity, low delivery pressure and quick priming are respects in which fuel-lifting mechanisms have been improved. Amongst widely used pumps of this description are the A.G., Arial, S.U. and S.W.

With the object of assisting our readers in the selection of high-quality fittings, materials and miscellaneous articles, we have concluded our list of makers of auxili

aries, with those unsuitable for classification under individual headings.
