The wife of a disqualified operator has been granted an 0-licence in her own name. Susan Grieveson, trading as C&R Grieveson, of Wabend, had applied for a new three-vetecle licence.

In July North Eastern Traffic Commissioner Tom Macartney revoked the licence held by her husband Christopher in partnership with his mother Margaret because of their maintenance record, and disqualified both partners for two years.

Susan Grieveson told a Leeds Public Inquiry that she had been in partnership with her husband for two years in a business processing scrap metal. The transport was currently being contracted out.

She appreciated that to hold a licence she would have to set up a separate business as a sole trader and that she would require a standard national licence.

DTC Patrick Mulvenna said he needed to be satisfied about two things:

first, that Mrs Grieveson's husband had nothing to do with the transport side of the business; second, that she had not been previously involved with the transport side of the business.

She reassured the DTC on both counts, saying she had been a silent partner in the business until her husband had bought his mother out Granting the licence, the DTC said he was satisfied that Susan Grieveson was not involved in the operation of the licence held by Christopher and Margaret Grieveson. He was also satisfied that neither of those partners would play any part in the operation of the new licence—and that Susan Grieveson was fully aware of the consequences if they did.
