DEFENDING in a case at Chester

a strong protest against what he described as "the contemptible methods employed by the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners to obtain evidence for prosecuting motor owners."

The chairman (Aid. H. Cropper) said that the bench dissociated itself from the criticisms made by Mr. Mather. " The Traffic Commissioners obviously have to get their evidence," he said. "from some source, and one . cannot expect a passenger who has travelled at Is. 6d. below the proper fare to furnish evidence."

Arthur Turner, bus proprietor, of Old Road, Chesterfield, was fined £5, with costs, for not complying with a condition of his road service licence, and £5 for using a bus as an express carriage otherwise than under a road service licence. A witness, who joined a Sheffield excursion, admitted that he was employed by the Chesterfield Corporation's transport department. Mr. Mather, after protesting against the delay in beginning the proceedings for an offence committed last January, said that there had been strong comments about the manner in which evidence against operators was obL tained. Why Chesterfield Corporation should be so interested as to countenance unfair methods for procuring evidence passed his comprehension. Ald. Cropper said that the bench regarded the offences as very serious, particularly as the defendant was an experienced operator and must know that price-cutting was unfair. field, recently, Mr. B.
