A company formed by Kathleen Long, wife of disgraced Liverpool haulier Anthony Long, has been granted a six-month interim Operator's Licence so she can prove herself, Aintree-based Hawthorne Trading Transport Services (HITS) had applied for a new national licence for eight vehicles and eight trailers, but North Western Traffic Commissioner Beverley Bell allowed 11 vehicies and 11 trailers, that being the size of fleet Long believed she would need.

The lance held by AJ Long Transport was revoked in January 1999 when its MD, Anthony Long, was jailed for smuggling rebated fuel from the Irish Republic. Transfreight Services was formed to lake over its work, but in July 2000 the TC revoked Transfreight's licence and disqualified it from holding an 0-licence indefinitely after hearing evidence that its drivers had been interfering with their tachographs and speed limiters.

Last October Transfreight director Kevin Malone was disqualified from holding an 0licence in all traffic areas, apart from the Welsh Traffic Area. for 26 months by DTC Mark Hinchliffe. Long said she was the sole director of the company, which was only involved in container storage.

Her husband had been involved in haulage and she had helped out Malone when "he was in a bit of a sticky situation". A previous licence application had been withdrawn when prospective transport manager Robert Taylor lost his licence.

Asked why she was so anxious to operate vehicles. Long said: "I want to prove to myself I can operate alone." After the TC had commented that the company would be an easy target for the enforcement authorities, Long said: "I know I will probably be harassed by VI."

She added that as company secretary of AJ Long Transport she had dealt with credit control before resigning to look after her children. She had not known anything about her husband's activities

until they were raided by Customs. Lo stressed that she was not a front for h husband. It was her business; her husbai knew that he was finished in transport.
