A LORRY DRIVER who died at the vast Pitsea waste dump near Basildon, Essex, last week was not complying with the terms of council regulations covering use of the dump, an inquest was told last week.
The Essex coroner gave permission for Redland Purle, owners of the pit to carry out their own post mortem on the body of Mr Thomas Carroll who collapsed in his cab while emptying a load of 15,000 gallons of aluminium oxide in sulphuric acid.
The inquest was told that another tanker had dis charged a load of sodium hydrogen sulphide liquors into the same pit only 15 minutes earlier. Regulations clearly stated that loads of the type carried by Mr Carroll should not be dumped into the general waste lagoon but into a special excavation. As it was the two loads had mixed together to produce highly lethal gases.
Mr Anthony Crossland, Environment Secretary, has said that the Government will decide soon whether to hold a full-scale enquiry into operations at Pitsea.
