• In a move designed to please chemical manufacturers, British Rail container subsidiary Freightliner has invested in 100 higher capacity boxes.

At present, Freightliner has around 1,000 conventional 6m (20ft) 24 tonne containers, but starting with its first 100 new type 30 tonne containers, it hopes to replace its entire fleet with the higher capacity models in around 10 years.

Both types of container are built to the same dimensions but the new type has a tougher structure which can carry heavier loads.

Freightliner is trying to build up its share of bulk traffic to the Continent — at present of the .29 billion worth of choir& cals produced in the UK evt year, around half is exportei and around half of this again carried by Freightliner.

El Freightliner has won a new .U50,000 contract for mingham-based Denholin C. tamer Agencies, which is ft UK agent for Norasia Line. Denholm's container fleet serves Europe, the eastern Mediterranean area, the Arabian Gulf, Pakistan and t Far East.
