• Mr. Dennis Le Conte, RHA Northern area secretary, has lately been busy dealing with local members' questions regarding the use. of twin tyres. The queries have arisen since a Northern newspaper reported a police case against a haulage firm, which was dismissed at Hartlepool magistrates' court on May 20.

The defendants. Swales Bros., of Hartlepool, were alleged to have used defective tyres on the insides of a four-wheeled rear axle. In defence. Mr. John Kirkup said that the firm would have been within the law if the lorry had been run without any inner wheels at all. "Therefore", he was reported to have said, -it is ridiculous to suggest that the lorry was dangerous because of the alleged defectiveness of the other two tyres.''

A defence witness, a tyre fitter, said he had examined the tyres and found that even the most worn had 3mm of tread. The prosecution had alleged that both inside tyres were bald.

Mr. Le Conte has warned members that the law requires all tyres to be within the legal limits, "in just the same way", he told CM on Tuesday, "as if extra lamps are fitted; they must all be legal. You cannot have red ones at the front and white at the rear. If you fit extra tyres they must conform with the law. As it happened, in this particular case, evidence was given that the lorry's tyres were all in good condition and presumably the bench took account of this in dismissing the case."
