• The first Volvo chassis equipped with tipping bodywork in the UK has recently gone into service with the Kettering earthmoving contractor John R. Billows Ltd. The vehicle is a 16-ton-gross four-wheeler and with its Pengco all-alloy 9 cu. yd. body and Edbro 4LNC heavy-duty, twin-ram tipping gear it scales 5.75 tons unladen, providing for a payload of 10.25 tons.
Interesting points about the 12.5ft wheelbase vehicle are that the floor of the body, built by Peterborough Engineering, is of 0.25in. thick light alloy to withstand continuous impact loading associated with site work and the pto engaging mechanism is air operated. The vehicle is powered, by the Volvo D 70A unturbocharged engine which has a gross output of 195 blip at 2,400 rpm and 463 lb.ft. torque at 1,400 rpm.
