20 MONTHS' LORRY HIRE COST £22,839 "

IN nine months-from June, 1955, F. A.

Bayliss, Ltd., of Harribrock, near Bristol, paid out 112,857 in hiring vehicles to supplement their own fleet. In the following 11 months they spent £9,982 in the same way.

This was stated at Bristol, on Monday, when Mr. S. W. Nelson, Western Licensing Authority, granted the company two additional vehicles under B licence for building materials and similar goods within a radius of 200 miles.

Mr. T. D. Corpe, for the applicants, said that on denationalization they bought four vehicles. An associate company, Lusgate Quarry Co., Ltd., who had three C-licence vehicles, would be prepared to surrender two.

Mr. A. Vincent, manager of Yale Mills, said that most of their haulage was put through the applicants, who at times hired British Road Services. This had not been a satisfactory arrangement, owing to the late arrival of their vehicles.

Mr. G. Bayliss, managing director of F. A. Bayliss, said his customers had complained of the hiring he had been forced to do and he had to keep their goodwill in mind. If the additions were granted, his relationship. with B.R.S. would not be altered in any substantial way.

Mr. Nelson said that he was satisfied the customers' evidence justified the application. Some of the company's enforced hiring ought, to be replaced.

Objectors were B.R.S. and British Railways.
