Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Iveco Ford is making changes to its 7.5-tonne New Cargo tipper models to make them more acceptable to operators running earlier Cargos.

For more than 20 years Ford and Iveco Ford 7.5-tonners have been the mainstay of the 200strong West London-based Cross Rent-a-Tipper fleet. But when there was a hold-up of New Cargos from Langley early last year, Cross bought a batch of 10 Leyland Daf 45 Series 7.5-tonners.

"The 45 Series has worked well," says Cross general manager Graham Forbes. "It's just as rugged for operating on rough ground and it can carry as much load as the old Cargo. Payload potential is 300kg less on the New Cargo."

Cross made it a condition of an order being placed that key changes were made. These included a smaller but slightly less noise efficient air cleaner being fitted, to improve ground clearance by 40mm. The air tanks, mounted on the side of the chassis, turned through 90°, to make them less vulnerable to damage. The brake fluid reservoir was relocated for the same reason and stone guards fitted to the brake actuators.

The SMC plastic bumper, 105mm lower than on the old Cargo, has been raised for tipper application to improve the front approach angle by 2°. It's likely that the stronger steel bumper, with protective grilles, will be an option.

Conditional on these changes, 10 New Cargos chassis have been ordered. As supplied the chassis have a rear overhang of 1,313min, which is too long for the company's standard Welford tipper body insulation. At a cost of £50 per chassis Welford crops the sidemembers and remounts the rear crossmember immediately behind the rearmost spring hangers.

Forbes will monitor the New Cargo against the Leyland Daf 45 series and the earlier Cargos.
